It comes after the news of a Labrador weighing about 8 stone (51 kilograms) was brought in to Ruddington Veterinary Centre last week.

The Labrador, Louie, has now been put on a strict diet to control his weight.

Veterinary nurse Lisa Hyde said “It’s potentially life-threatening to him. It’ll probably reduce his life-span by about five years if he carries on the way he’s going.”

“He could develop joint problems, arthritis. It’s going to put a big strain on his heart and he could also develop conditions like diabetes.

A Grampian Fire and Rescue Service crew armed with a ladder came to the rescue and was able to get the beagle to safety.

A spokesperson said they were alerted and the situation was resolved within 15 minutes.

George is very rare because he’s the last surviving tortoise of his kind.

For years, experts at Galapagos National Park have been hoping he would have babies with his companions.

Rangers have now discovered a nest of eggs in his enclosure which they hope will hatch into babies.

Julian Gunning, 49, was killed at a crossing near Christ’s Hospital railway station in Horsham, Sussex, on Monday.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said the driver of the train tried to make an emergency stop.

The family said in a statement: “They were crossing the railway line carefully at Christ’s Hospital only to realise that the dog had unexpectedly stopped on the track.”

The statement added: “Julian was a devoted family man whose untimely death has devastated his whole family. They have asked to be left alone to come to terms with their tragic loss.”

Mr Gunning’s death was not being treated as suspicious and the coroner has been informed.

There is a lot of responsibility to owning a dog. A dog can’t take care of itself and needs you to look after them.

Before you take the big step of choosing which dog you wan’t, make sure you have enough money to look after it. They don’t just need tins of dog food - there are vet bills and they may hurt themselves which will result in a huge bill. Make sure you have some money put away incase of such event.

You must also make sure you have plenty of time for your dog. They’re a living thing just like anything else and need attention and love. You need to make sure you can give that to them and also be able to walk them when they need it.

Remember: a dog is a mans best friend.
